Description
King Penguin, oil on canvas
60 x 80 cm
From the collection of the Atelier fritz Hug
Creation year
early 1960s
This picture of a king penguin is a Hug classic, so to speak, and one of Fritz’s best-known pictures. On the one hand, it is typical of his painting style of the 1960s, with clear lines and sharp contours. What is special about the picture, however, is that the animal’s belly and the Antarctic background are the same color, namely white as the primed canvas. Only the head, wings and feet are actually painted, as well as the sun, which is only hinted at. A perfect depiction of a penguin with only minimal use of painting and color.
