Description
Bullfinches in a Winter Landscape, oil on canvas
Creation year
Winter of 1971
An early childhood memory are the Sunday outings to the nearby Uetliberg in winter. We used to feed the birds and squirrels during the ascent. Bullfinches like to stay in groups in winter, which makes for wonderful pictures in the snowy winter forest. However, this picture from January 1, 1971 was painted in the mountains, as the background is dominated by bare larch trees, whereas in the lowlands it would be green spruce trees. The pretty birds were often depicted in old paintings of the Garden of Eden, for example by Brueghel or Rubens.
