Description
Emperor Penguins, oil on canvas
Creation year
1977
The painting shows a large colony of emperor penguins in the antarctic summer. Fritz was obviously less interested in a zoologically accurate depiction of the birds than in the ornamental expression of the painting. While the dark backs and white bellies form sharp contrasts in the foreground, only the orange-black heads of the more distant animals can be identified before the picture fades into an orange sky at the horizon.
