Description
Takahé Rails, oil on canvas
Creation year
1960s
The South Island takahé rail from New Zealand had been considered extinct since 1894. The species was rediscovered in 1948. Thanks to research and rigorous conservation measures, the takahé has survived to this day and the population has grown to around 300 animals, which means that it is still highly endangered. Fritz dedicated this colorful work to the bird in the 1960s as part of his WWF series on endangered species.
