Kiwis are by far the smallest flightless birds and only exist in New Zealand. Although they have been strictly protected for more than 100 years, they are still considered endangered. This is due to the introduction of species such as cats, dogs, foxes, and martens by Europeans, which continue to pose a serious threat to the species today. The color scheme of the painting highlights a natural advantage of this small bird: kiwis are almost perfectly camouflaged in their environment, the many forest areas of New Zealand.
