Fritz painted and donated these macaws for the 50th anniversary of Zurich Zoo so that the proceeds from the painting would go to Zurich Zoo. Fritz liked to depict scarlet macaws and blue-and-yellow macaws together because the composition of the different colors challenged him. In nature, the two species are rarely seen together, so Fritz took artistic liberties here.
