Pair of Great Crested Grebes, watercolor on handmade paper
48 x 33 cm
Creation year
1977
Great crested grebes are duck-sized water birds that are common in Europe and feed mainly on fish. The picture shows them in their magnificent plumage, that is in spring during the mating season. The incidence of light must be very low, presumably at dusk, which is why the plumage and the water appear almost unnaturally colorful to the observer’s eye. For once, Fritz has added an unusually generous amount of watercolor to the usual few and precise charcoal strokes.
