The wood grouse or capercaillie is the largest fowl in Europe. Although it is not threatened with extinction, it has become rare due to dwindling habitats. Fritz created this small lithograph of a capercaillie as part of a series of four, together with an eagle owl, a lynx and a hedgehog, which a tool trader had ordred from Fritz for his very best customers. The four works never went on sale, but were used exclusively as client gifts.
