Lake Sihl and its surroundings, close to Fritz’s home in the city of Zurich, became a popular and repeatedly used background for his lithographs, drawings and oil paintings. In ancient Greece, the little owl was regarded as a bird of wisdom and a symbol of the goddess Athena. What fascinated Fritz about the bird, and why he often painted it, was the intense and stern look that characterizes the appearance of this small owl species.
