Description
Vineyard Snail, mosaic
49 x 83 cm
From the collection of the Atelier Fritz Hug
Creation year
1978
Perhaps the most beautiful mosaic Fritz ever created is also probably his only depiction of a vineyard snail. Magnified by a factor ten, the animal is crawling up a wall or is shown from a bird’s eye view from above. Fritz formed the snail’s skin from elongated oval stones, and for the shell he cut the stones into small rectangular pieces, resulting in a very lifelike representation of the different surfaces. This ingenious work adorns the entrance to the house where Fritz lived and worked for many years.
