Description
La Pharmacie à Lambaréné, oil on paper
Creation year
1951
In the winter of 50/51, Fritz traveled to Lambarene, where his sister was working in Albert Schweitzer’s hospital. During his six-month stay, he created numerous works depicting the country and its people. A particular challenge was the completely different color palette with which he was confronted: On the one hand, there was different daylight and the people’s colorful clothing, but what was most unusual were the completely different light reflections on the people’s dark brown skin. This picture of the Lambarene pharmacy also clearly shows why the term “jungle hospital” was quite appropriate for Lambarene.
