Description
Dance of the Masks, oil on canvas
Creation year
1950
During his stay in Lambarene in Gabon, Fritz had numerous encounters with the local population, which he captured in some impressive pictures. In this picture you can see a mask dance by means of which the dancers wanted to leave behind mistakes they had made, a ritual with a certain similarity to Christian confession. The painting style is much wilder than we are used to from Fritz. The painting is perhaps influenced by expressive realism, an art style of the time.
