Roosters have a natural instinct to assert themselves against other roosters in order to establish who’s the boss in the yard. In the lower right corner of this lithograph, Fritz has added the head of a hen to the fierce battle scene, “au crayon”—that is, with colored pencils, as he notes at the bottom of the sheet. The hen, however, seems unimpressed by the commotion; she appears rather bored or even slightly disgusted. She seems to be thinking, “Why can’t those two just strut around a bit?”
