Today, the German Shepherd is rarely used as a herding dog. Instead, it is employed as a service dog by customs, the military, and the police; German Shepherds are also often trained as seeing-eye dogs. The sheep, whose head and shoulders have been sketched into the scene here with a few deft strokes of charcoal, seems to be trying to remind the dog of its original duties. This enhanced lithograph from the Wildi-Rohr collection also bears the number 99 in its edition.
