When young male lions reach sexual maturity, they are driven out of their birth pride. They then band together with a few fellow outcasts, which makes it easier for them to hunt for food. That is why small lion prides consisting exclusively of young males are not uncommon. Fritz visited Kruger National Park several times during the winter of ’72–’73, where he captured this group of three with a brush and watercolors. As this magnificent little work demonstrates, Fritz created brilliant watercolors even without his signature charcoal strokes.
