Description
European Mouflon, watercolor on handmade paper
33 x 49 cm
From the collection Nideröst
Creation year
1978
The European mouflon was once considered almost extinct, with only small populations surviving in Sardinia and Corsica. Since the 19th century, these wild sheep have been reintroduced to Central Europe. Although the species is still considered endangered, it once again lives in the Alpine arc, Czechia, and the Balkans. The superbly executed watercolor depicts a powerful ram, which Fritz probably chose as his motif because only male mouflons have the magnificent horns typical of the species.
