Fritz often painted portraits of dogs on commission. Because oil paintings take time to complete and require several sessions, he often started with sketches in charcoal and watercolor. This watercolor of a Cocker Spaniel is a particularly fine example: the breed is instantly recognizable, but Fritz has also captured the specific expression of this particular animal almost perfectly in his sketch.
