Our vacation days at the seaside often looked like this: Fritz took us to a butcher’s or fishmonger’s and bought inexpensive leftovers. And while we children were busy feeding them to the stray cats of the village, he sat at his easel and painted what he saw. It is quite possible that this happy holiday memory from Capoliveri on the island of Elba was also created in this way.
