Le Château d’Aigle

The hilltop castle of Aigle was given its present form in the 15th century following the conquest by the Republic of Bern. The characteristic round towers suggest that the princes of Savoy must once have ruled here as well. Vineyards are depicted on the castle hill, hinted at only in an Impressionist style. The yellow-green hue of the vines and the milky-white sky suggest a rather gray day in early autumn. The Vaud Alps in the background are depicted in particular detail; together with the castle’s similarly rugged silhouette, they form the central element of the painting.
