Diligence, frugality and dutifulness are three terms associated with the ant. “Go to the ant, you sluggard, consider its ways and be wise!” is one of Solomon’s sayings. The three figures in this brush drawing appear quite different. They seem cheerful and upbeat, are they dancing or is the ant on the far right telling the others a joke? In any case, the artist’s enjoyment of the motif is just as palpable as his sense of humor.

The brush drawing was created as an illustration for the book “Am Bitz Fabulieru” containing Valais animal fables by the dialect poet Hannes Taugwalder, published in 1982. Our ant picture belongs to the fable “D luschtig Amanda” (The Funny Amanda), which tells the story of a young ant.
