The manul is a species of cat that lives in the rocky steppes of Central Asia, primarily in mountainous regions, where it can be found at elevations of up to about 3,000 meters. Fritz took great delight in this species, partly because its small, low-set ears and very thick fur always make it look as if it were truly in a bad mood. Fritz therefore always enjoyed clearly capturing this distinctive trait of the manul in his paintings.
