The bobcat, so named for its stubby tail, is significantly smaller than its cousin living further north, the Canadian lynx. It also lacks the latter’s large paws and is therefore not well-suited to life in the snow. Instead, it thrives in the dry forests and savannas of the continent’s southwest. This is exactly how Fritz depicted this lynx: in a sparsely rendered, dry savanna landscape, where the cat crouches tensely, lying in wait for prey.
