Fearful Young Hyena, oil on canvas
Creation year
1979
Of all predators, hyenas are probably the least popular. They are considered insidious and cowardly scavengers. Brehm wrote about them: “Of all predatory animals, it is undoubtedly the most malformed, nastiest appearance; to this, however, must be added the mental characteristics that make the animal detestable.” Today we know that these assessments are not true. Hyenas are skillful hunters that live in large matriarchal groups with complex social structures. Fritz liked the animals and occasionally depicted them. This handsome young hyena should also appeal to most of his fans.
