Description
Polar Bear Mother with Child, oil on canvas
Creation year
1979
The subject of motherhood has always occupied Fritz. Polar bears, both males and females, are basically solitary animals. The only exception is the mother-cub relationship, which usually lasts around two and a half years. During this time, the cub is suckled and introduced to the art of seal hunting before being abandoned by its mother. The picture was probably painted in a zoo; the animals appear to be lying on a reddish artificial rock against a turquoise background. Both shades also reappear in the shadowy areas of the polar bear furs, which together create an interesting and harmonious composition.
