Orangutans have a mother-child bond that is almost unique in nature. A female orangutan only gives birth to a single baby every seven to eight years. The mother carries the child with her for two years, after which they maintain constant visual contact until the infant is around five years old. Only then does a gentle weaning phase begin. Motherhood in the animal world is a frequently recurring theme in Fritz’s work, and with this picture he has tried to capture the special relationship between the orang mother and her child.
