Description
Mandrill Heiri II, oil on canvas
Creation year
early 1960s
In the 1950s and 1960s, Fritz often painted in the small monkey house at Zurich Zoo. The animals knew him and always made a big racket when he entered the house with his easel. Only one of them ignored him with stoic calm: A mandrill called Heiri, who probably felt it was beneath him to make a monkey of himself for a human. Fritz dedicated this dignified portrait to him after his death.
