Description
Zermatt, the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat Railway, oil on canvas
Creation year
1960s
The Seilers, who owned several hotels in Zermatt, were big fans of Fritz’s art. This allowed us to spend our family vacations at their hotels in Zermatt for several years and settle the bill with paintings created during our stay. This painting is one such example: Across four layers of the composition, light and dark blue delphinium blossoms form the foreground; directly behind them, the Gornergrat Railway departs toward the mountain station. The large Belle Époque building is likely the Victoria, a Seiler hotel that was demolished long ago. And in the very background, towering above everything else, stands the mountain of mountains: the Matterhorn.
