Description

Olivone “Hommage à Varlin”, oil on canvas

40 x 80 cm

Creation year

1976 – 78

This painting from the Blenio Valley features an unconventional composition: the slender church tower on the right and a row of village houses at the bottom frame a sort of window in the upper left corner of the picture, revealing a rocky mountain above a colorful autumn forest. In front of the church tower, a grumpy cat looks back over its shoulder, as if to see who dares to be disturbing it. It is not clear why Fritz dedicated the painting to the famous Zurich artist Varlin. It does not resemble Varlin’s painting style; perhaps Fritz simply wanted to honor a highly revered fellow artist with this particularly beautiful piece of artwork.
