This very early painting depicts a narrow gravel road leading toward the horizon between a meadow dotted with fruit trees and a farmhouse. It likely shows a landscape in the so-called Unterland region in the northwest of the canton of Zurich. The color palette is bold and vibrant, with many shades of green and brown for the landscape and bright blues for the sky. The color of the foliage suggests an autumn day; the sun is shining brightly. The brushstrokes are visible and dynamic, lending the painting a great deal of texture.
