Thalwil Forest Pond, oil on canvas

Creation year

early 1940s

Fritz and his four siblings learned to swim in the forest pond near Thalwil, something that would no longer be possible today, as swimming is now prohibited there for conservation reasons. As he would often do later in his career, Fritz painted a scene of a shoreline with the horizon reflected in the water. The slight movement of the water’s surface causes the reflection to appear slightly distorted. The painting conveys a sense of stillness, and the color palette—almost devoid of red tones—contributes to the calm and contemplative mood.
