Palm Plage, oil on paper
79 x 52 cm
From the Collection of the Atelier Fritz Hug
Creation year
Early 1940s
This oil sketch depicts a beach on the French Mediterranean coast, probably near Nice. At the center stands a simple entrance gate bearing the inscription Palm Plage, marking the entrance to a beach resort. To the right, beach cabins raised on stilts define the scene, while to the left the sandy shore opens onto the turquoise sea. With a luminous palette, loose brushwork, and an effortless, sketch-like quality, Fritz captures the atmosphere of a warm summer day. This early work already demonstrates his assured sense of light, pictorial space, and the distinctive ambiance of the Mediterranean.
