Fritz often painted sketches for his lithographs in watercolor and charcoal pencil, as he did for the work Hedgehog Life. Some of these sketches are in the possession of the Atelier Fritz Hug and are also shown here in the digital picture archive. On this sheet, the composition of the hedgehog family is already complete, while the color scheme with the brown tones and the blue shadow areas is only hinted at.
