Description
Reindeer Herd, oil on canvas
Creation year
1979
Reindeer are characterized by two special features: They are the only deer species in which both males and females have antlers. And secondly, reindeer form large herds, with sometimes 100,000 animals going on seasonal migrations together. The picture is more or less the logical consequence of these two facts. An almost unimaginable number of reindeer are moving from the bottom left of the picture to the top right. The many antlers and the contrasting winter coats, gray-brown at the top and white at the bottom, create something like an ornamental pattern, which only reveals the actual object, namely a herd of reindeer, on closer inspection.
