Fritz has drawn or painted quite a few donkeys, often on location in Ticino, Italy, or North Africa. However, to the best of our knowledge, Fritz never traveled to Greece. It was likely a photograph of a ruined Greek temple that inspired him to use it as the backdrop for this painting featuring the donkeys of Greece. In rural areas and on some of Greece’s islands, these hardy and sure-footed beasts are still in high demand as both riding and pack animals.
