Description
Red Deer on November 3, oil on canvas
Creation year
late 60s
Fritz would never have inflicted pain on an animal and he abhorred hunting. Nevertheless, he had numerous hunters among his fans, including some good friends. Fritz brings this ambivalence into the picture by mentioning November 3, the name day of St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunting. The motif, a portrait of a deer at night, has never let go of Fritz and has always challenged him again. That is why there exist several other pictures with the same composition and with similar coloring.
