Cows – A Double Portrait

As an urban Swiss and lifelong resident of Zurich, I never really understood why cows became a kind of national symbol for Switzerland. Fritz certainly liked cows and he frequently painted them, often as actual portraits. In this picture, too, you can see that he didn’t just paint an animal as a species, but precisely these two cows as the unmistakable, soulful individuals he saw in them.
