Bison are among the largest land mammals, although their weight is quite unevenly distributed: the head and shoulders are incredibly massive, while the rear body regions appear much smaller. The bison in the picture are standing with their heads towards the viewer, which reinforces this fact. Fritz skilfully adds spatial depth to the picture by emphasizing the front part of the animals with strong charcoal strokes and rich color, while the hind legs of the animals are only vaguely visible.
