Description
Henry VIII and His Wives, lithograph on handmade paper
76 x 54 cm
Creation year
1960s
Fritz set out to create a large lithograph featuring a wide variety of domestic cat breeds. As he worked on the composition, he came up with the idea of dedicating it to Henry VIII, King of England, and his many wives. Historically, however, the scene is not accurate, since Henry was married not five but six times. Even so, the humorous image proved immensely popular with his admirers. It sold out within just a few weeks and remains difficult to find on the art market today, even in the age of online marketplaces.
