Description

Contented Elephant, oil on canvas

Creation year

early 1960s

This painting of an elephant who, according to the text, feels content in his own skin is an original, almost cheeky construction: The animal itself is really nothing more than a drawing, painted in black oil paint with sharply defined contours. The entire rectangular surface of the picture—the object itself as well as the background—is painted in shades of gray, brown, and white as to resemble a large piece of elephant hide. Looking at it, you get the sense that the artist himself was probably also quite pleased with the work.
